Intellectual Property & Technology Transfer (IPTT)
Overview

The Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office (IPTTO) coordinates the process of identifying, evaluating, protecting and marketing selected inventions and other IP creations of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Intellectual Property
Intellectual Property (IP) refers to creations of the mind such as inventions, designs, trade marks and copyright-protected works (writings, plays, films, artistic works, etc.).

The term refers also to know-how, trade secrets, plant breeders’ rights, folklore and the traditional knowledge of indigenous communities.

The different types of IP come about through the mental efforts,   insight, imagination, expertise and creativity of humans.

Technology Transfer
Technology Transfer refers to the process of commercializing University intellectual property and research products for economic and social benefit.

The IPTTO assists UKZN staff and students to protect their inventions and other IP creations by filing patent applications or other IP registrations as appropriate. It also assists UKZN inventors, by developing strategies to market and license the technologies to relevant industries.

NOTE: The establishment of the IPTTO of the University of KwaZulu-Natal was funded by the DST's Innovation Fund as part of the South African Government's initiative to promote and support innovative development programmes.
