29. Professor Shannon Vaughn Hoctor

SCHOOL OF LAW

Professor Shannon HoctorProfessor Shannon Hoctor (DJuris) joined the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in 2002 lecturing Criminal Law, Specific Offences, Sentencing and Access to Justice in South Africa in the LLB programme of the School of Law on the Pietermaritzburg campus, as well as teaching on and co-ordinating the Advanced Criminal Justice LLM programme.

Hoctor, Deputy Dean at the School of Law on the Pietermaritzburg Campus in 2010-2011, has extended his activities into being an external examiner for legal subjects for a variety of South African universities.

He was ranked 17th among the Top 30 researchers at UKZN in 2005, fourth in 2006, eighth in 2008, seventh in 2009 and 29th in 2010.

Hoctor is the current Editor-in-Chief of the South African Journal of Criminal Justice and assistant editor of Obiter. He has acted as referee for numerous journals including the South African Law Journal, the Stellenbosch Law Review and the South African Journal of Environment Law and Policy.

He has held a variety of administrative positions at UKZN as well as during his time at the University of Port Elizabeth.

He has had 76 articles published in accredited journals, 24 in non-accredited journals and has also authored and co-authored several books.

Hoctor has written 44 chapters and revisions in books and monographs, with the most recent being:
Offences relating to publications (E7:1-12); Civil aviation offences (G6:1-15) in Milton, Cowling and
Hoctor South African Criminal Law and Procedure (Vol III: Statutory Offences) 2ed (loose-leaf, 1988 – Juta Law, Cape Town)

Hoctor has delivered 18 papers at conferences in South Africa and all over the world as well as 11 papers at seminars.

Awards he has won at UKZN include:
  • the Merit Award for Achievement in Research
  • the Merit Notch for Achievement in Research and University Service
  • College of Law and Management Studies Certificate of Excellence for Achievement in Research in 2008 and 2009
