Prof Sultan Khan
My academic life spans sixteen years having spent much of my youthful days as a political activist hence my late entry into the world of knowledge production and dissemination. I have studied mostly part-time and have obtained two Bachelor’s Degrees with five majors in Psychology, Social Work, Criminology, Sociology and Development Administration. I hold an honors degree in Sociology, Master’s Degree in Social Policy and PhD in Sociology. In 2007 I was a co-founder of a writing group - Writing Initiative to Support Academics (WISA) which helped junior academics to write and publish their research projects. To my credit I have three edited books and produced three series of DVDS titled “Out of Sight Classroom” – which incorporates field research trips with students in high risk research sites in order to demystify the notion that sociology is real and alive. These DVDs are now used as a teaching and learning tool. Over the years I have informed several policy documents, obtained a C3 NRF rating, been an active member of the South African Sociological Association, the International Sociological Association, registered with the Health Services Profession as a Social Worker, presented 16 papers at national and similar number at international conferences. I have undertaken various local, national and international research projects that informed policy.
